Helpful travel tips for your trip

When departing the United States for China:

• Make sure to abide by the 3-1-1 rule; all liquids, aerosols and gels in your carry-on luggage must be three ounces or less and must fit comfortably in a one-quart sized bag. Each passenger is allowed one bag.
• Check with your airline for their rules concerning baggage, such as size and weight restrictions and additional fees.
• If concerned with whether specific items are allowed into China, it is advisable to contact the Chinese Embassy in Washington, or one of China's consulates in the United States. The Hong Kong Department of Customs and Excise provides specific information regarding Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong SAR) customs requirements. The following items are not permitted to be brought into China:
• All weapons, including replicas and imitation weapons, gunpowder and explosive devices
• Counterfeit currency and securities
• Illegal and addictive drugs, such as opium, morphine, heroin, marijuana, addictive sedatives and hallucinogenic drugs
• Dangerous germs, insects, plants, diseased animals, etc.
• Food and medicinal products that are potentially harmful to people and animals.
• Harmless foods limited to supply the duration of the trip may be carried into the country by visitors. One case of each type of product is permitted per person per day. Anything over this limit must be reported to Customs and inspected.
• One pet per person per entry is permitted into China. Allowed pets are limited to cats and dogs and must meet inspection requirements before admittance into the country.

When departing China for the United States:

• China also implements the 3-1-1 rule, the same as in the United States. All liquids, aerosols and gels in your carry-on luggage must be three ounces or less and must fit comfortably in a one-quart sized bag. Each passenger is allowed one bag.
• Reconfirmation of departure reservations and early airport check-in are essential because international flights departing China are routinely overbooked.
• Chinese customs authorities enforce strict regulations on the export of certain items from the country. Contact the Chinese Embassy in Washington, or one of China's consulates in the United States for more information.
