News & Happenings

August 24, 2006

"The passenger process at the check point is running smoothly. We cannot be complacent about any part of the system. Given the 20 percent increase in checked baggage since the ban on liquids in carry-on bags, we are paying close attention so the system does not become overwhelmed. We are managing the checked baggage system to ensure it continues to run efficiently."

Assistant Secretary Kip Hawley

Additional Information

A Transportation Security Officer at Reagan National Airport examines a passenger's checked baggage.

There has been a 20 percent volume increase in checked baggage since the liquids/gel ban on August 10.

TSA is processing the increased checked baggage with no negative impact to our systems. No flight delays are being incurred because of our systems.

The Transportation Security Officers continue to screen 100 percent of all checked baggage and the level of security is not compromised due to an increase in checked baggage volume.
