TSA at Birmingham International, Huntsville-Madison County and the Northwest Alabama Regional airports recently responded to an appeal from one of their own, collecting 40 boxes of goods to help outfit a children's hospital in Afghanistan.

The request came from Birmingham Transportation Security Officer Rex Mitchell, a chief storekeeper in the U.S. Navy Reserves who is deployed with a joint military logistics unit at a remote base in Kabul. Soldiers from Mitchell’s unit have been repairing and rebuilding the hospital as well as fixing three ambulances.

"The men and women of TSA Birmingham, Huntsville, and Muscle Shoals consistently demonstrate their goodwill, kindness and compassion," said Federal Security Director Lyndel Hardy.

Donations included blankets, gently used clothing, stuffed animals and toys, pencils, pens, crayons, coloring books and hygienic items.
