Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) Positions

The Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) Assistant reviews case files and various computer indices to determine a person's current immigration status; performs file analysis and evaluation of each case where adjudication or resolution has been delayed, and/or problems encountered; reviews and screens non-routine applications and petitions for benefits, such as those involving incomplete or inconsistent data; and provides information and assistance to applicants/petitioners and/or their legal representatives in response to inquiries on all aspects of immigration and nationality law. CIS Assistants answer a variety of written case status inquiries concerning CIS procedures from the public and assist in the preparation of monthly reports. This position may be filled at the GS-5, GS-6, or GS-7 level.
GS-5: You qualify at the GS-5 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Examples include reviewing applications for immigration benefits for accuracy, validity, and proper form and format; using various computer software programs to produce office support materials on immigration benefits; and/or setting up and maintaining subject matter files, technical instructions, and/or operating procedures on immigration benefits.
GS-6: Requirements of GS-5 and one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Examples include reviewing and screening routine applications and petitions for immigration benefits, using computer indices to determine a subject's current immigration status; and/or providing routine information and assistance on applications for immigration benefits.
GS-7: Requirements of GS-6 and one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level. Examples include providing assistance on complex applications and petitions for immigration benefits to applicants and/or their legal representatives; and/or analyzing and evaluating cases where screening or resolution of requests for immigration benefits has been delayed and informing inquirers verbally or in writing of problems encountered and action required.
Completion of a bachelor's degree or a full 4-year course of study at an accredited college or university in any field leading to a bachelor's degree may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-5 level. One year of full-time undergraduate study is 30 semester or 45 quarter hours. Appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience also may be used to meet the total qualification requirements for the GS-5 grade level.
